I Am
“I Am.” These two simple words can have so much meaning. In the Bible we see this phrase used in Exodus 3:14. “God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” Who is I AM? How can we ever begin to realize how powerful I AM is? The mysterious power of I AM is undeniably there. Let’s think and ponder on some of the qualities of I AM.
First, I AM is awesome. No, not the kind of awesome we use to describe that new super cool movie, the kind of awesome we can’t understand. Deuteronomy 10:17 says “For the Lord your God is God of all gods and Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who is not partial and takes no bribe.” Meriam Webster dictionary describes awesome as “an inspiring awe.” We need to have an attitude like David has in Psalm 65:8. “They who dwell in the ends of the earth stand in awe of Your signs; You make the dawn and the sunset shout for joy.” Our God truly is awesome!
I AM is loving. I like what Psalm 136:26 says about His love. “Give thanks to the God of heaven, for His steadfast love endures forever.” Is it not amazing how much love God has for children? As we can see in John 3:16, He loved us so much He gave His only Son for us. There is not a soul in this world that deserves that great sacrifice. His love is why we are here.
I AM is forgiving. As humans, it’s sometimes hard to forgive another human when they do us wrong. I always like to think about the story of David when thinking of God’s forgiveness. In 2nd Samuel 11 we can read the story of David and his sin with Uriah’s wife, Bathsheba. We then see in chapter 12 David’s punishment and forgiveness given to him by the Lord. Although we still have to face the consequences, God’s forgiveness will always be there. Acts 3:19 says “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.”
I AM is all knowing. Sometimes we think we know what is best for us, but we don’t. When we start ignoring God thinking it’s for our benefit, we have a problem. I have always been in awe of Matthew 10:30. “But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.” If you know me, you know I have very thick and curly red hair. It’s amazing that God knows that number. We also see in Psalm 147:4 that God knows the number of stars in the sky. We should be standing in awe of this.
I hope we can all learn something by looking at the qualities of I AM. There is so many other qualities I AM has that we could look at. I sure have enjoyed looking at these verses. Let’s praise I AM!
